Child Presence Detection

Child Presence Detection (CPD) regulation is high on the international agenda, aimed at preventing the ‘hot car’ incidents that have claimed the lives of hundreds of babies and young children over the years. Starting in 2023, Euro NCAP will award points for CPD, while the Hot Cars Provision in the US will mandate CPD in every new passenger vehicle.

Only solutions that enable both occupant detection and classification-based sensing across two seating rows will earn the full four points.

Seat Belt Reminders

Seat Belt Reminders (SBR) are also under the regulatory microscope. Key markets including the EU and Japan already require rear bench SBR, and the US Department of Transportation’s FMVSS 208 aims to mandate this feature as well.

Standard solutions for rear bench SBR depend on multiple weight sensors, which are notoriously prone to false alerts caused by heavy luggage, while adding to the car’s cost.

Richer data supporting occupant detection and classification now enables enhanced Seat Belt Reminders (SBR) that cover all rear seats and avoid false alarms caused by heavy objects or children in a Child Restraint System (CRS).

Optimized Airbag Deployment and Suppression

Euro NCAP introduced a standard method of assessment for automatic passenger airbag disabling systems in 2018. In the U.S., recent amendments to FMVSS 208 demand automatic airbag suppression in the presence of a baby.

A single weight-based seat sensor may be unable to distinguish between a baby in a CRS and an older child, and will fail to ensure airbag suppression.
